Lynn's Realization of a Dream

May. 9th, 2008 08:27 pm Mother's Day?

I know it is supposed to be a day to celebrate the institution of "Motherhood."  However, for me it's not.  There always seems to be family drama or trauma.  This year won't be different on that score either.  The writing is on the wall, so to speak. (Mom issues this year.)

The downside of being a single mom is I've never really had my own children remember me on Mother's Day.  No dad around to help them remember or provide funding or ideas.  (The irony is that their father sure got ticked when Father's Day rolled around and he didn't get a card.  typical.)  Same thing for birthdays. Last Mother's Day was a very nice exception to that rule though.  After a certain age, when you've taught your children to be kind and courteous, you would think you should not have to remind them of those occasions.  Anyway, I don't look forward to the day on a personal level - ever.

When I was growing up, Mother's Day was a big deal.  We went to church with the appropriate white or red corsage for the mom or grandmother.  (People don't do those anymore, I don't think.)  My sister and I sang in the church choir all our lives and there was usually special music.  Next, we almost always had everyone to our house for lunch which my mom insisted on cooking.  She loved being the sacrificing martyr.  That always made me question why she did it.  If it ruined her day, what was the point?  Oh, it was being able to play the martyr.  Tacky of me I know.  But, she said all she wanted was for us to clean the house and help her cook for her gift.  However, it was never done right in her estimation, and after all her cooking, we just had to do it over again.

I just want peace and quiet.  A day with no drama.  I have a feeling I won't get it though.  Hmm.  Bitter, much?  Probably.

Apr. 27th, 2008 03:55 pm The Whole Truth

Wow.  I started and finished David Baldacci's newest yesterday.  It definitely makes one think about the motivation of money when it comes to war and other conflicts.  Especially since the end of the Cold War.

It's a terrific read and I highly recommend it!

Apr. 25th, 2008 06:44 pm Lewis Black on Writing a Book

I found this through the Sizzling Pens blog.  TOO TRUE!  Comedian Lewis Black discusses the dilemma of writing a book when faced with a blank page...  Now I'm off to contemplate this same issue for myself.

Enjoy!

Apr. 10th, 2008 11:44 pm My horoscope from Free Will Astrology

My horoscope from Free Will Astrology (totally ripped off from Amie.)

Verticle Oracle card Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Marie Poland Fish was an oceanographer who invented a new form of underwater sound detection for the navy. To perfect the technology, she spent years studying the sounds made by 300 different species that live in the sea. Her innovations allowed attack vessels to tell the difference between enemy submarines and schools of fish, thereby avoiding assaults on the fish. She's your role model for the coming week, Scorpio. May she inspire you to develop foolproof methods for distinguishing between actual threats and the harmless influences that may superficially resemble them.

Apr. 7th, 2008 07:25 pm Monday...

I hate the beginning of a work week.  I've had the weekend to relax (yeah, right) and getting up at the crack of dawn on Monday to do it all over again is soooo not appealing.

My daughter wrecked her car a few weeks ago.  Actually, it was totaled.  Luckily, it wasn't her fault and she only had a mild whiplash.  I got the payoff check today.  Pitifully small when compared to what I paid for it in August.  Now I have to wait for my insurance company to get paid by the other guy's insurance company and get my deductible back for me (and my daughter's medical bill reimbursement.)  Problem is, she needs a car now.  **sigh**  Rental cars are EXPENSIVE!

It did have a bright spot though.  A week or so ago, I hoped I would be one of the first 20 respondents to the HQN Presents blog's giveaway.  I never heard anything back, so I was sure I missed the boat, so to speak.  However, today I got home and checked my mail.  Lo and behold, I got a package in the mail, from HQN.  Inside was one of the new HQN Presents Extra's (not a previously released and newly packaged story either).  Soon I will be reading "Mistress in Private" by Julie Cohen.  I love free books!  I'll let you all know how it is.
